History tells us that yoga dates back over 5,000 years. However, the Yoga practiced today is very different from what it was in earlier times. Yoga was introduced to the West at the end of 1800s and early 1900s and gained popularity in 1930s and then again in 1960s. At Yoga Gym we mainly practice the Hatha Style of Yoga, which is an old classical style of Yoga originated in India. Ha means Sun & Tha means Moon. Most yoga practices we find now a days falls under this category. It is a practice that develops stability, strength and balance and creates energy.
YIN YANG Yoga combines 2 styles of Yoga to improve energy & flexibility while promoting relaxation and healing thus providing a wonderfully balanced practice.
The YIN in Yin Yang Yoga involves holding Yoga poses for 3 – 5 minutes or longer to target the connective tissues, such as ligaments, rather than focus on the muscles. This helps release tension and increase circulation, while the more active YANG postures help to increase stamina and build strength.
Yin is a feminine, passive, cooling energy, while Yang is a masculine, dynamic, warming energy. The concept of Yin Yang originated in ancient Chinese philosophy, where opposite forces are seen as interconnected and counter balancing.
Yin Yang Yoga helps bring balance to the body by engaging the Yin and Yang Elements.
Restorative Yoga is about teaching our bodies to rest so that our nervous system can come back into balance. It is a relaxing and supportive practice where the body is well supported with props, blankets, pillows, strap so that we can yield and find a deeper state of relaxation. The poses are held for a longer period and vary from 5 – 20 minutes so the body can learn to relax, let go and just BE.
It is a receptive practice instead of an active practice.
Through slowing our breath rate and initiating the Parasympathetic nervous system it can help with Blood Pressure, Heart conditions, indigestion, anxiety and much more.
The most popular and well-known definition – Sleep with a trace of Awareness – the state of Awakened Sleep.
To access this state of consciousness, profound restfulness is required in the body . It also requires mental stillness and spaciousness.
Yoga Nidra helps strengthen our Will (Iccha), Knowledge (Jnana) and Action (Kriya). It encourages the mind to let go of the external world and turn inwards, giving our Senses a Deep Rest from the activities of contemporary society.
